The Relevance of the Accra–Kumasi Expressway: A National Investment We Cannot Delay
The announcement of the Accra–Kumasi Expressway marks one of the most significant infrastructure commitments in Ghana’s recent history. For decades, the movement of people, goods, and essential services between the country’s two largest cities has depended heavily on the existing N6 corridor - a road that is overburdened, congested, accident-prone, and no longer fit for Ghana’s rapidly growing economic activity. The proposed expressway is not just an upgrade; it is a strategic national investment that holds the potential to reshape mobility, enhance productivity, and stimulate economic transformation.
The current journey between Accra and Kumasi often takes far longer than expected due to traffic bottlenecks, poor surfaces, and mixed heavy-vehicle interactions. This has direct implications for business efficiency, road safety, and the cost of transportation. With Ghana’s major industries - including agriculture, commerce, mining, and logistics - relying heavily on smooth transport links, the inefficiencies of the old route have become a major barrier to growth. The expressway therefore responds to a long-standing national need.
Several governments have, in the past, tried to improve the linkage between Accra and Kumasi. Efforts to dualize the N6 to enhance movement between the two cities have faced several challenges, including delays, cost overruns, and deterioration over the period. Many Ghanaians have questioned the rationale behind constructing an expressway on a new alignment while the existing corridor remains uncompleted. However, the assurance from the government, as expressed by both the President and the Minister for Roads and Highways that the construction of the expressway does not affect the continuation and completion of the dualization efforts on the existing corridor is refreshing to many.
By constructing a dedicated 198 km high-speed expressway with controlled access, proper interchanges, bridges, and rest areas, Ghana stands to cut travel time by nearly half. The economic benefits are substantial: reduced vehicle operating costs, improved reliability for freight operators, and enhanced trade flows between the coastal regions, the middle belt, and the northern part of the country.
These improvements will make local businesses more competitive and provide smoother access to markets for farmers, manufacturers, and traders.
Beyond mobility and commerce, the expressway carries strong developmental significance. Large infrastructure projects of this nature stimulate thousands of direct and indirect jobs - from engineering and construction to supply chain services and local business opportunities along the corridor. The project also has the potential to spur the creation of new economic zones, logistics hubs, and industrial parks in communities between Accra and Kumasi. This will contribute to balanced regional development and reduce urban pressure on Ghana’s major cities.
A safer road environment is another critical outcome. The current Accra-Kumasi stretch ranks among Ghana’s busiest and most accident-prone corridors. A modern expressway with well-designed lanes, proper separation of traffic, emergency response facilities, and regulated access points will significantly reduce road crashes. For a country striving to reduce its road fatality rate, this safety improvement is not optional - it is essential.
However, the long-term success of the expressway depends on quality construction, sustainable maintenance, and thoughtful environmental and social safeguards. As Ghana builds this critical asset, the project must avoid design shortcuts, poor drainage, or weak material standards that have plagued some previous road projects. Environmental protection, fair compensation for affected communities, and a sustainable toll system will also be vital to ensure equity and accessibility.
In truth, the Accra-Kumasi Expressway is more than a transport project, it is a bold statement of Ghana’s readiness to modernize its infrastructure and unlock new levels of economic growth. It is an investment that will pay dividends for generations if executed with discipline, transparency, and technical excellence. The time to build it is now.
